Dealing with Cracking, Dry Skin

Find out how to restore moisture back into your skin and prevent dryness and cracking with our Baton Rouge and Prairieville dermatologists.dry skin

Most of the time dry skin isn’t a cause for concern. Yes, it may feel a bit unpleasant or it may be annoying but in some cases the issue will resolve on its own; however, if you are battling dry skin and feel like the issue is winning, our Baton Rouge and Prairieville dermatologists, Dr. W. Trent Massengale, Dr. Jessica LeBlanc and Dr. Ashley Record, have some information about causes and treatment options for combating your dry skin.

Bathe the Right Way

You may think that soaking in a tub will provide your skin with the gentle care it needs. Of course, this could also be leaving you with dry skin since water has the ability to strip away the natural oils from the skin; however, this doesn’t mean you have to nix baths altogether. The next time you decide to soak in the tub, add a mineral oil or other natural oil to your water to heal dry skin. You’ll also want to limit the amount of time you spend in the bath or shower (around 5 to 10 minutes). Also, opt for warm—not hot—water.

Don’t Forget About Moisturizer

While this might seem obvious you would be surprised how many people don’t use moisturizers and don’t use them regularly. After your shower or bath you should pat your skin dry and then apply a moisturizer that will help lock in moisture. If you aren’t sure what kind of moisturizer will do the trick this is where our Baton Rouge skin doctors can help. Just ask us; we would be happy to provide you with some product recommendations.

Stay Hydrated

How much water do you drink each day? If you aren’t sure then chances are you aren’t drinking enough. By drinking enough fluids every day you wouldn’t believe how much this can prevent skin from getting dry, flaky and cracked. Hydrating from within is key to keeping skin hydrated on the outside, too.

Wear Protective Gear

Do you find that doing chores like washing dishes can leave your hands red, cracked or unhappy? If so, there is a simple solution: wear rubber gloves while doing any tasks that leave your skin feeling parched, dry and irritated. By wearing protective gear like breathable socks, properly fitted shoes and gloves you can prevent everyday chores from ruining healthy skin.

Don’t let dry skin have the final say. Isn’t it time you fought back? Call Atlas Dermatology in Baton Rouge and Prairieville today to find out what you can do for your skin.
