What is Acne?

Acne consists of pimples (blackheads and whiteheads), papules, cysts, or pustules which spread across the forehead, cheeks, neck, shoulders, back, and chest. Left untreated, repeated outbreaks cause noticeable scarring, not to mention the continual discomfort and embarrassment that most acne sufferers experience.

Acne lesions develop because individual skin pores become blocked with excess sebum (oil) and dead skin cells. The American Academy of Dermatology says acne is influenced by:

  • The hormonal fluctuations of adolescence and even menopause
  • Poor skin hygiene and accumulation of a particular kind of bacteria
  • Heredity
  • Oily skin

How Atlas Dermatology in Prairieville and Baton Rouge, LA, Can Help
Simply arrange a consultation with one of our board-certified dermatologists who will examine your skin and map out a treatment plan unique to your needs and lifestyle. Common treatments include:

  • Topical medications such as benzoyl peroxide and tretinoin (vitamin A)
  • Oral medications such as birth control pills and antibiotics (when lesions become infected)
  • Surgical extraction (done in the office)
  • Chemical peels
  • Light treatments which eradicate bacteria

Your doctor will encourage you to be patient with your treatments as acne can be very stubborn. Optimal results usually take about six weeks, no matter the treatment regimen.

Prevention
While you cannot prevent all acme outbreaks completely, you can manage them. Your dermatologist may suggest:

  • Gentle once a day washing of affected areas with a recommended acne wash
  • Never using a hard scrubber or washcloth, but rather, using the fingertips to exfoliate the skin
  • Avoiding tanning and fatty foods
  • Never squeezing or picking at acne blemishes
  • Keeping your hands away from your face as touching it may increase the number and severity of flare-ups
