Lower your insulin level and love your skin…and the rest of you too!

A person came into see me last week with a few problems. He/she  was about 50 years old. They complained of skin tags in the arm pits, lower face acne, and dry itchy skin. They had been recently placed on a medicine for high cholesterol to go along with other medications that they take for reflux disease, thyroid, and mild high blood pressure.  Now, I could have just snipped the tags and given them a cream for the acne and dry skin.   But these are just symptoms of hyperinsulinemia.

This is the simple explanation:  Insulin is an enzyme that is released by the pancreas when you eat carbohydrates.  These carbs include: wheat, corn, sugar, and milk. The problem is, we were never designed to eat the amount of carbohydrates that we are eating today. It’s like an engine running on the wrong fuel source.  It may run but it doesn’t run as well as it was designed.  The high insulin levels begin to wreak havoc on your body eventually leading to weight gain, hypertension, reflux disease, depression, hypothyroidism, high cholesterol, hair loss on scalp, hair growth on face, low libido, etc.  Inflammatory conditions can also worsen if you are prone to arthritis, psoriasis, hidradentitis, to name a few.

It’s called metabolic syndrome.  The metabolism of the food that we are putting in our body is making us sick. So what can we do about it?

The choice is yours to make. You can either eat a fuel source as your body was designed or prepare to suffer the consequences. Replace the carbs with healthy fats (such as avocado and nuts) and lean protein (fish, chicken, pork, etc).  Eat lots of your favorite veggies like lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts and asparagus.  Eat sweet potatoes instead of potatoes.  Cauliflower rice instead of rice. Eliminate or greatly reduce the wheat, corn, sugar, and milk.  Minimize fruits high in sugar like bananas, grapes, and most fruit juices.

The alternative sadly  is to buy a monogrammed pill box to begin filling it up with medications for all of the symptoms that result from putting the wrong fuel in your engine.   Hippocrates, a famous Greek physician, in the year 440 BC said, “Let food be thy medicine and let thy medicine be food”.  It is still true today.

At Atlas Dermatology, we combine modern day medications with a desire to get at the root cause of the problem and treat it.  We don’t want to be just pill pushers.  We want to help you live according to how you were designed. Call or click today to schedule your appointment.
