Did you know Psoriasis is more than just a skin condition?
Although Psoriasis is classified as a dermatologic disease, it starts from within, and its damage could be more than just skin deep.
Most of us recognize Psoriasis as a rash on the skin in areas such as knees, elbows, trunk and scalp. It is patchy, scaly and can sometimes be itchy. It is most often noticed by the characteristic silver scale that lies on top of red, inflamed skin.
What many don’t know, is that while Psoriasis can be genetically predisposed, it is the exhibition of inflammation that is occurring inside the body. I nternal inflammation can be triggered by a variety of causes such as stress or trauma due to an illness, surgery or event and diet. While some of this inflammation is unseen, it can be wreaking havoc on your cardiovascular, skeletal, and endocrine systems. We often see patients exhibiting Psoriasis displaying other conditions such as metabolic syndrome which can include increased waist circumference, high blood pressure, low thyroid levels, insulin resistance, depression, and others.
Arthritis can also be caused by the very same internal inflammation and what we have seen through new developments in medications and diet regulation is that those achy joints can also be relieved. What many patients are most surprised by is that some of the symptoms they have been experiencing are not just “part of aging.”
Come see us at Atlas to learn more about ways to combat Psoriasis both internally and externally. We believe in customized treatment for each patient using the latest in anti-inflammatory medications combined with lifestyle modifications to improve overall wellbeing.
